Renovation, adaptation and efficiency upgrade of the Gaggia pavilion, San Giovanni e Paolo Hospital.
The Civil Hospital located in Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo is the only healthcare facility still active in Venice. The Gaggia Pavilion extends over three floors, plus an attic floor dedicated to technological systems. It covers a total area of 6,500 m² and houses departments that are essential for the hospital’s operations. Its restoration therefore required an intervention that would not affect normal departmental activity and that would prioritise consolidation of the existing structure over demolition, with works planned in several phases while keeping part of the pavilion in operation. The floor slabs were consolidated using carbon-fibre systems and new lightweight concrete slabs with perimeter connections; the existing timber roof was also completely rebuilt.
The primary objective of the refurbishment was adaptation to seismic and fire-safety requirements under Regional Law 22/2002. A new BMS system was installed to improve the technological and energy efficiency of the entire pavilion.
